Biography

I am a practitioner academic specialising in online journalism, at Newcastle University. I specialise in various areas in online journalism practice; from information literacy, to on-page SEO, to online news writing, and data journalism (statistics for journalism). Most recently, my research has been concerned with the history of data visualisation; specifically the use of information graphics in news and popular culture. More broadly, my research interests concern media hoaxes, processes in investigative journalism, and theories of verification in journalism and news. My PhD ('News Values in Online and Data-visual Journalism') was concerned with how news values are operationalized in online journalism and visual data journalism.
